Facts about Falcon, CO

Located in El Paso County, Falcon is an unincorporated community with a population of more than 10,000. As is true for a number of communities in Colorado, the advent of the railroad had much to do with its establishment.

What would become Falcon first served as a railroad hub. Beginning in 1881, the Denver and New Orleans laid a rail bed in the area, Shortly afterward, the Chicago and Rock Island ran rails in an area that now runs parallel to Highway 24. Both lines were closed by the 1930s.

The first signs of the sale of lots in Falcon occurred in 1888. Within a short time, enough people were in the area to form a viable community. Before the end of the 19th century, Falcon was home to two hotels, several saloons, a newspaper, two general stores, and a school.

For much of it’s history, Falcon remained primarily a farming and cattle community. The establishment of a small business center in the 1980s changed that. New growth took place as more people began to settle in the area. Overall, the population doubled between 1990 and 2000. While efforts to incorporate took place in the early 21st century, residents voted down the measure.
