Found in Teller County, Florissant is an unincorporated community that’s home to more than a hundred people, With a history dating back to 1859, the community has sought to retain it’s rural charm while also being welcoming to those who want to move into the area or visit.
Originally envisioned as a mining camp, the community began to attract farmers and others to the area. By 1870, a community that was included a post office and a few small businesses.
The inspiration for the community’s name comes from a town in Missouri that bears the same one. Judge James Castello is said to have made the suggestion, since Florissant, Missouri was his hometown.
Today, the community is known for it’s historic sites and for the warm welcome that visitors receive. Growth continues at a slow but steady pace, and has allowed the community to support a library along with a number of small businesses. Those interested in the history of the area can visit the Pike’s Peak Area Historical Museum and the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. Mueller State Park provides more than 50 miles of hiking trails as well as an additional 19 miles that are designed for horseback riding and mountain bikers.
