Located in the central area of Dallas County, Highland park is currently home to more than 9,000 residents. The city is located just four miles north of the downtown Dallas area. Highland Park is bordered by Dallas on the east, west, and south, while it shares a boundary with University Park. Together, Highland Park and University Park are known as the Park Cities.
The history of Highland Park goes back to 1889, when the Philadelphia Place Land Association purchased acreage for a total cost of a half-million dollars. Plans for development were undermined by the Panic of 1893, and some industry moved into the area.
In 1906, John S. Armstrong purchased a portion of the 1889 acquisition and began to develop what would be known as Highland Park. The design was released in 190 and included setting aside 20% of the land for use as public parks.
After a 1913 effort to be annexed by Dallas failed, the growing populace chose to incorporate. Growth over the next few years led to Dallas initiating annexation efforts in 1919. By this time, serious resistance to annexation existed, and the matter remained unresolved until 1945.
