Plano is the largest city in Collin County, with portions located in Denton County. With a population of more than 285,000, the city is considered part of the Dallas-Forth Worth metroplex.
The first settlers entered the area in the early 1840s. In short order, they established a sawmill, a grist mill, and a general store. Mail service was established within a few years, providing people with more incentives to settle in the area. The presence of a post office required naming the community. After several names were rejected, the submission of Plano was approved.
The completion of a line of the Houston and Central Texas Railway to Plano helped to ensure the community was poised for growth. In 1873, the city was officially incorporated. While growth continued as a slow but steady pace, the real boom occurred after World War II. Major gains in population occurred during the 1970s, and led to the development of a more comprehensive school system to support the influx of families, many who held jobs in nearby Dallas.
Today, Plano continues to serve the greater area as a suburb. Along with industries of its own, the city offers an excellent parks and recreation system, a variety of entertainment options suitable for all ages, and a quality of life that continues to earn Plano top awards from a number of prestigious sources.
