Facts about University Park, TX

Located in Dallas County, University Park is a city that’s found in the northern end of the city of Dallas. The current population is around 23,000. Considered one of the most affluent areas in Texas, University Park was identified as the second wealthiest city in the United States, according to data found in the American Community Survey of 2018.

The establishment of Southern Methodist University in 1915 provided the reason for the creation of University Park. At the time, that area of Dallas was considered rural, providing plenty of room for the new university to grow. At first, utilities were provided to the new homes by way of the university. As it became clear that the infrastructure would not support both the institution and the growing community, annexation was sought with Dallas and with nearby Highland Park. Both were rejected due to the prohibitive cost of providing city service.

This led to the decision to incorporate as a separate city. Bond issues were soon issued that helped to fund the establishment of city services as well as the construction of municipal buildings. By 1945, the population exceeded 20,000, and the city had developed a reputation of being a highly desirable place to live.

In addition to the University, the city is also home to the George W. Bush Presidential Center. In 2013, the presidential library for George W. Bush opened and quickly became a key element within the city.
