Located in St. Louis County, Richmond Heights is considered an inner ring suburb of the city of St. Louis. Currently, it’s home to more than 9,000 residents. The name is said to be inspired by a suggestion made by Robert E. Lee, who thought that the layout of the countryside was similar to that of Richmond, Virginia.
The idea for the city developed due to the 1904 World’s Fair, held in St. Louis. John Rankin Dyer purchased 120 acres that were adjacent to property owned by St. Louis real estate professional Frederick Neisen. Together, the two men sought to parcel the land into lots and offer them for sale. Their efforts brought a number of people to the budding community. This led to the official incorporation of Richmond Heights in 1913.
Over the years, the city has claimed a number of prominent citizens. Those who were born or lived there for a time include Charles Lindbergh, Mae Wheeler, Arthur Ashe, Chuck Berry, and Harry Hampton Jr.
