Found on the east side of Cincinnati, Hyde Park is a wealthy neighborhood and is currently home to more than 13,000 residents. The history of the neighborhood is traced back to the 1870s, although significant growth did not occur until later.
In 1872, there were only a few homes in what is Hyde Park today. The arrival of the Norfolk and Western Railway changed that. For the remainder of the decade, the neighborhood gained in popularity. By 1892, what was known as the Mornington Syndicate formed to promote development in the area. Composed of several local real estate moguls, the syndicate sought to make the most of the city’s network of streets and emerging transportation options to create an exclusive area for the well-to-do.
As part of the planning, Hyde Park was incorporated as a village in 1896. Cincinnati annexed the village in 1903, spurring additional growth. Today, the neighborhood remains thickly populated, with a number of the residents tracing their roots back to the late 19th century.
