Located in Warren County, Mason is a city that’s located 22 miles from downtown Cincinnati. Currently, Mason is home to more than 33,800 people. The city is know for being home to the world’s largest tennis stadium, the Lindner Family Tennis Center. The Center is the site for the Western and Southern Open, an international tennis competition for men and women.
The city’s history is traced back to the 1803 land purchase made by William Mason, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. At that time, he purchased a total of 640 acres. By 1815, he had platted 16 lots on part of the acreage and established a village that he called Narnia.
Mason passed away in 1830. Following the terms of his will, additional plats were created beginning in 1832. Those combined with the earlier plats were referred to as Palmyra, possibly after a village in New York state.
Efforts in 1835 to update an error in the name for the post office revealed that there was already a Palmyra in Ohio. This led to the citizens settling on the name of Mason for their village.
Mason would not be incorporated into a city until 1970. Today, more than 500 businesses are found in the city. It’s said that more than 90 corporations have their headquarters in Mason, or operated flagship manufacturing operations within the city.
