Facts about Montgomery, OH

Found in Hamilton County, Montgomery is home to more than 10,700 people. Considered one of the oldest contiguous settlements in the county, the history of Montgomery can be traced back to the last years of the 18th century.

Legend holds that the settlement had a tavern housed in a log cabin in the dawning years of the 19th century. It also had accommodations that made it possible for travelers to stop for the night. A turning point in the early years of the settlement took place in 1806, when settlers from Montgomery, New York established farms and trading posts in the area. Over time, the settlement adopted the name from the town in New York.

The unincorporated area remained relatively small until the 1960s. At that time, more people began to build homes in the area while continuing to work in Cincinnati. The growth that began during that time continues to increase the population today.

In 1976, the new city established the Montgomery Landmarks Commission to coordinate efforts to preserve the area’s cultural heritage. At present, the Commission has aided in efforts to identify and maintain 32 landmarks found throughout the city limits.
