As the county seat for Jefferson County, Golden is home to more than 20,000 residents. Named for Thomas L,. Golden, the city was officially incorporated in 1871 as Golden City. Originally a mining town, the city today enjoys a more diverse economic base and offers a number of historical and cultural attractions.
Founded in 1859, Golden became home to an influx of people seeking to make a fortune with gold mining. Additional setbacks occurred during the Civil War, leaving Golden City as a shadow of its former self. The establishment of a railroad line that connected Golden City to Cheyenne, Wyoming offered the chance to return to prominence, but the race with Denver to make the connection was lost. Ultimately, the efforts to connect with communities to the west proved more productive.
Toward the latter decades of the 19th century, Golden became established as an industrial and trade center. The establishment of multiple universities also spurred growth. Historic preservation also helped to keep the town going during the first decades of the 20th century.
The post World War II era brought significant growth to the area. Improvements in mass transit aided in the boom, along with continued efforts to support education and historic preservation. Today, the city offers a variety of museums, schools and colleges, concerts and community celebrations that attract a number of visitors each year. That includes beer festivals that take place in the spring and autumn.
