Found in Maricopa County, Fountain Hills is a town that’s currently home to more than 23,000 residents. The history of the area goes back to the latter part of the 19th century, when the first settlers entered the area. Once the home of the Yavapai tribe, there are still petroglyphs found in the Dixie Mine that’s located in the part of town that borders the mountains.
What would become the town of Fountain Hills was first developed as part of Pemberton Ranch in the early 20th century. C. V. Wood, president of McCulloch Oil, is credited with developing the town. The name of Fountain Hills was inspired by the gigantic fountain that is a focal point of the downtown area. At the time the fountain was built, it was the largest of its kind in the world. It’s considered the fourth-largest today.
Fountain Hills officially became an incorporated town in 1989. Considered one of the most desirable towns in the state, the town government hosts a number of events throughout the year. Three of the most notable are the Spring Fountain Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts, the Fall Fountain Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts, and the Thunderbird Artists’ Fountain Hills Fine Art Festival.
