Facts about Glendale, Arizona

Located roughly 14 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix, Glendale is a city that’s found in Maricopa County. Currently, it’s home to more than 248,000 residents. The city has its origins in the later 19th century, when a planned community transformed the site from a desert into a thriving town.

The origins of Glendale can be traced back to the formation of the Arizona Improvement Company. Formed in 1887, it was headed by William John Murphy, who was a resident of Flagstaff at the time. The plan for the company was to sell water and land rights south of the site of the Arizona Canal Company. As lots were purchased, he also oversaw the construction of what today is known as Grand Avenue. This provided a more direct route from the new town to Phoenix.

Additional platting took place in the 1890s, commencing with the arrival of a number of Brethren and River Brethren families. The railroad brought additional settlers and businesses, including a beet sugar factor that operated until 1913.

Glendale is sometimes referred to as Arizona’s Antique Capital. A number of properties that are on the National Register of Historical Places are found within the city. Glendale is also home to Midwestern University, which was the first medical school constructed in the greater Phoenix area.
