Located in Maricopa County, Tempe is home to more than 180.000 residents. Considered part of the Phoenix metropolitan area, the city derives its name from The Vale of Tempe in Greece. The main campus for Arizona State University is located within the city.
First People settlements are known to have existed in the area where Tempe is located prior to the 15th century During that time, migration began to occur, leaving the area sparsely populated. Only a few remained nearby when Fort McDowell was established near what is now the city center in 1865.
Originally, the settlement was part of Hayden’s Ferry. By 1879, the present name was suggested and shortly afterward adopted. For much of its early history, Tempe was known as a sundown town. That is, African Americans were permitted to work within the city limits while encouraged to live elsewhere.
The advent of schools and the railroad in the latter 19th century paved the way for more progress in the first years of the 20th century. With the 1911 construction of Roosevelt Dam, the city was poised for growth, along with nearby Phoenix and other Valley towns.
Today. Tempe is considered one of the major Arizona cities for commerce as well as education.
